Hemodialysis is the most common type of dialysis. It is a procedure where a dialysis machine and a special filter called an artificial kidney (or a dialyzer), are used to clean the blood.
Hemodialysis involves accessing the bloodstream through a surgically-prepared access site that allows blood to pass through a special filter of a dialysis machine, be cleansed and return to your body. Treatments are administered by well-trained medical professionals and highly- skilled technicians.
During Hemodialysis, blood cells, protein and other important things will remain in the blood as it is too huge to pass through the membrane where the smaller waste products in the blood, such as urea, creatinine, potassium and extra fluid pass through the membrane and are washed away.

Call your provider if you notice:
Also, call your doctor or report this to your healthcare provider if any of the following symptoms are severe or last more than 2 days:
Generally, patients on dialysis are advised to increase their protein intake and limit the amount of potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and fluid in their diet. Patients with diabetes or other health conditions may have additional diet restrictions. It's important to talk with your dietitian about your individual diet needs.
Talk to our dialysis team if you are unsure about your diet. We will assist in monitoring your treatment with monthly lab tests to ensure RIGHT DIALYSIS TREATMENT are being prescribed and you are meeting your dietary goals.
The following important tips can be helpful with your diet:
It is important to keep track of your fluids intake because excessive fluid can build up in your body and may cause
Hemodialysis removes extra fluid from your body. However, hemodialysis can only remove so much fluid at a time safely. If there is too much fluid in your body during your hemodialysis session, your treatment may make you feel discomfort. You may get muscle cramps or have a sudden drop in blood pressure that causes you to feel dizzy or upset your stomach.
One way to limit how much liquid you have is to limit the salt in the foods you eat. Salt makes you thirsty. Avoid salty foods such as chips and fishball.
Talk to our team if you are not sure how much should you drink per day. Remember Soup and most fruits/vegetables contain water, such as watermelons, grapes, apples, oranges, tomatoes, lettuce, and celery.
Hyperphosphatemia occurs when there is too much phosphorus in your blood. In dialysis patients, the kidneys cannot effectively remove excess phosphorus, leading to a buildup. Over time, high phosphorus levels can cause complications, such as: Weak and brittle bones (osteoporosis). Calcium deposits in the blood vessels, heart, and other tissues, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Itchy skin and joint pain.
Despite being on dialysis, high phosphorus levels may occur due to:
Controlling your diet is a key part of managing phosphorus levels.
Since dialysis patients need adequate protein intake to maintain muscle and overall health, it is important to choose protein sources with a favorable protein-to-phosphorus ratio. This means selecting foods that provide high-quality protein with lower phosphorus content.
When consuming protein, it is essential to take phosphorus binders as prescribed to minimize phosphorus absorption from your meals. Phosphorus binders must be taken with the first bite of food to ensure they work effectively by binding to the phosphorus in the meal. Skipping doses or taking them after eating significantly reduces their effectiveness.
Look out for ingredients like "phosphate" or "phosphoric acid" on packaged foods and beverages. Phosphate additives can dramatically increase your phosphorus intake due to their high bioavailability, making it even more crucial to avoid such products.
Phosphorus Binders
These medications reduce the amount of phosphorus absorbed from food. To work effectively:
Common Types of Phosphorus Binders:
If untreated, hyperphosphatemia can lead to serious health issues, including:
Taking an active role in managing your diet and medications can prevent complications and improve your quality of life.
